The solution

Working together with the project’s electrical designers, MTC Flextek selected Airam’s Futura PC and Plano Pro luminaires for the new Nurmijärvi facility, both built around Helvar Components’ Freedom range. The hall’s lighting is divided into front and back sections, each tailored to support the different activities taking place.

Both luminaire families combine a Helvar Components Freedom LED driver with a Freedom Node Casambi unit, giving each fixture wireless control capability built in from the start:

• Airam Futura PC: Energy efficient sealed industrial luminaire equipped with the Freedom LED Driver LL23-80-FD-150-350 & Freedom Node Casambi wireless unit
• Airam Plano Pro: Energy efficient back lit module luminaire equipped with the Freedom LED Driver LC50-FD-900-1400 and Freedom Node Casambi wireless unit

What started initially as a plan for simple on/off lighting was upgraded mid-project to a full wireless control solution, making use of Helvar Components Casambi Ready LED driver and Node combinations. This shift reflected MTC Flextek’s prior experience with wireless control at their Pirkkala headquarters, where staff had found the system intuitive and reliable in daily use. Because of the simplicity of the Freedom concept for the luminaire manufacturer Airam, after deciding the control system as Casambi the upgrade to wireless control could be implemented without searching for new additional components from different manufacturers.

Feature set that makes this solution work well not only on paper, but in practice too:

• Built for wireless control: The Freedom LED Driver and Freedom Node Casambi unit combination gives every luminaire native wireless control out of the box – no separate control modules or additional wiring needed.
• Switch-free operation: With the exception of a single room, the entire MTC Flextek facility operates without physical light switches – lighting is fully managed through the wireless control system.
• Adaptive light levels on demand: The hall runs energy-efficiently at a baseline of 60% light output, with the ability to occasionally increase output on request when tasks requiring more precise work call for it.
• Smart timing profile: A dedicated scheduling profile ensures lights switch off automatically in the evening, even if longer motion sensor timeouts have left areas illuminated.

Better lighting for industrial facilities

Industrial halls present a unique lighting challenge: large spaces, varied tasks, and changing needs throughout the day – all while minimizing the energy use. By choosing luminaires built on Helvar Components’ Freedom drivers ready for Casambi control, MTC Flextek now has an optimized lighting setup built with different luminaires for varying application areas: from office use to illuminating industrial halls. They are all now providing just the right level of high-quality light, working perfectly under smart control scheme. It’s a practical example of how robust components with built-in wireless intelligence can deliver a better everyday experience for facility staff while keeping the overall lifecycle costs down, supporting MTC Flextek’s ongoing pursuit of an environmental certification for the building.
